I’ve heard that your gas mileage does better if you go the speed limit, but I guess I just assumed it was a story cops spread around to keep people at the posted speed. You know, since the speed limit isn’t the same everywhere.
Over the last couple days, though, I noticed that my gas mileage does much better at 65 mph than the, oh, 75 mph I usually travel on the freeway to and from work. For the record, the posted limit is 65 mph.
I tested out my theory this morning. When I got on the freeway, my mpg read 21.1 mpg. I sped up to my normal 75ish mph, and my mpg dropped to 21.0. I slowed down to 67 mph (I can’t do the exact speed limit! That’s preposterous!), and my mpg steadily climbed on my commute and reached 22.4 by the time I parked.
Amazing!
I guess it’s time to take the lead out of my foot. With these gas prices, I can’t afford the mpg I waste by speeding anymore! At least now I won’t be paranoid and watching for flashing lights in my rearview.

I decided yesterday to call the salon and see if my stylist had an open appointment. She had one for lunchtime, so I scheduled the appointment to chop off all my hair.
It still feels so weird because I’ve had it long for three years now. I used to wear my hair this length, but I guess three years is a long time for my memory! It feels great, though, and I LOVE how it looks.
The plan was to buy the Kashi GoLean shake mix in vanilla. The plan was not to go to four different stores looking for the stuff and still be without it. Stupid stores. Stupid Trader Joe’s being out of it. Stupid hungry tummy.
How freaking pumped am I for the New Kids on the Block comeback? YES, I’m that much of a goober. I loved them back in the day, and I love their new single, Summertime.
And the guys are just cracking me up left and right. It’s semi-ridiculous to see them busting out the old dance moves, but they’re also laughing at themselves, so it brings the ridiculous level back down.
Plus, they say funny things like this, copied from their MySpace profile:
“We’re still young, we’re still hot,” McIntryre answers with a laugh. “Our fans are between 25 and 35 now because they were really young then. They’re still very attractive — and very legal. So it’s going to be a girls night out. I know my wife’s going to be there every step of the way, but it’s still going to be fun.”
One suggestion I received was to increase my morning protein. The other suggestion was basically to stop chowing down so much at lunch and actually eat my snack when I intend to – mid-afternoon.
After doing a little protein research, I decided my best bet is to add to my morning smoothie. Kashi GoLean has powdered shake mix that packs a whopping 21g of protein and 7g of fiber per serving, which is two scoops. The downside is it also packs 220 calories per serving. I certainly don’t need the extra calories, so I figure if I cut it to one scoop, I’m still getting an additional 10.5g of protein and 3.5g of fiber – that’s a definite improvement!
The extra protein might even help carry me through lunch and make me less hungry, which will allow me to leave my snack until snacktime.
I’ll report back with my results!
