I won Round 1. The dough won Round 2 (I attempted and failed miserably last night).

I’m currently in the middle of Round 3. So far, so good.

Round 2 resulted in super sticky dough. I realize now I should have added more flour while my mixer was kneading the dough, but by the time I realized that it was abnormally sticky (when I punched down the risen dough), it was too late. I tried to roll it out anyhow, but I couldn’t lift it off the counter without tearing the dough, and that was after I heavily floured the counter and the top of the dough.

So it went in the garbage.

But I’m not giving up without a fight, which is why I’m attempting the dough for the second night in a row. That and I have a severe craving for pizza.

I was back at it today on Free Rice and learned something rather crappy: A jenny is a female donkey.

Awesome.

I’ve spent the last 30 minutes expanding my vocabulary and helping end world hunger.

If either of those things sounds appealing to you, visit FreeRice. Each correct answer donates 10 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program.

Go. Kill some time. Exercise some brain muscle. Feed some people.

I caved in yesterday and went to my company’s Thanksgiving buffet for lunch. I actually did really well and kept the portions small. I even stayed within my WW points for the day.

But then I was convinced by co-workers to go back for day two today and didn’t do so hot with the portions. Let’s just say I’m pretty sure I’ve already used all my day’s points.

And we haven’t even gotten to the real holiday yet.

So much for my claim that I would only have one Thanksgiving meal.

I’ll be thankful if I don’t gain any weight this week. Really, really thankful.

This season is the exact reason I don’t miss working at a daily newspaper.

The news never takes a holiday. And because the news is always happening, so does the work in a newsroom, which means having time of for the holidays is unheard of.

I only worked at a newspaper for a year and a half, but that was long enough for me to learn that I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t give up my holidays for the sake of producing a paper. I did for that year and a half, but I didn’t like it.

Which is why I’m thankful to work for a weekly magazine (that doesn’t print over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays) and for a company that values time off to spend with family.

And it’s also why I doubt I’ll ever work for a daily newspaper again.
