My first week back from vacation was beyond crazy. I didn’t even find time to unpack our suitcase until the following weekend, much less work out. Fine. That happens.

Last week was a bit of a recovery from traveling and the crazy first week back. I walked/ran Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and I did the first part of my Biggest Loser Power Sculpt DVD on Saturday.

Apparently, my muscles have turned to mush after nearly three weeks away from the DVD, because I was so sore it hurt to sit yesterday, so I took the day off.

Last night, I had a horrible time falling and staying asleep and have felt like a zombie all day. I came home hungry and tired, so I’ve been dumb and have been grazing and lounging trying to build the energy to work out. At least I changed into workout clothes so I didn’t get too, too comfortable or let the evening pass by without thinking about working out.

Even now, after looking at what I typed in that last paragraph, I feel myself grasping for the next best excuse to stay stuck in a lazy rut. Not good, Batman. Not helping are the recent numbers showing up on the scale. I know it’s partly because of nature, but it also has a good bit to do with the fact that I just haven’t been as active (rather, as intensely active) as I was before our trip.

It’s so easy to give up, but that won’t do me any good. I’ve stuck to my plans for so long, now, and I’ve made some decent progress. I’ve now bought two pairs of size 8 pants, and I am able to wear clothes I haven’t worn in nearly three years, some longer. I have a couple pairs of pants that are just a smidge too tight and are waiting on another couple pounds to melt away, too.

I’m about halfway to my overall goal, and I’m feeling that halfway fatigue – hard core. I just need to pick myself back up, get rejuvenated and stop thinking about how nice it’d be to not work out.

(edit: I wrote this yesterday afternoon, but my brain apparently failed me because I saved it as a draft instead of posting it. So pretend it was posted yesterday, which was Monday.)

I’m a day late, but the scale read 150.2 yesterday morning. Seeing as it read 156.something last Sunday, that’s a huge deal! I managed to put on five pounds during our Mexico vacation, but I don’t care because I also managed to lose all that plus a pound during our first week back.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get a single workout in last week. Between work, Rocky’s surgery and recovery and other reasons, I had a c-r-a-z-y week. All I was able to do for my weight was get all my water in for each day and make sure I watched what I ate.

Well, it paid off!

I have to admit, though, I finally gave into a few-days-long craving last night and had a cheeseburger and vanilla cone from McDonald’s. And truth be told, it was my second cone of the weekend. I couldn’t get my mind off it, though, so I finally gave in. Boy, am I feeling that cheeseburger today, too. I don’t know how much is reality and how much is in my head, but I just feel heavy and blah today.

Oh, well. It was just one day, one cheeseburger, right? The important thing is to move past it and move on. I’ve got my workout clothes on right now and am waiting for my dinner to settle, then I’m off for a nice long walk/jog around the neighborhood. It’d be better to do one of my workout videos, but it’s beautiful outside today – sunny, breezy and not too hot. I feel horrible not taking advantage of the weather.

We came home from vacation to find a pathetic, injured cat. He apparently shook his head so hard because of itchy ears that a blood vessel (or more than one) erupted in the penna of his right ear (the pointy part), causing a large hematoma (aka blood blister) on his ear that was so heavy it made his ear flop.

We got home late Saturday, so I couldn’t speak with out vet until Monday morning. They said to bring him in, but we had to wait until Tuesday morning. Sure enough, they confirmed it was a hematoma and said to leave him for surgery to repair it. The vet called me a couple hours later to say all went well, and Rob picked up our pathetic boy on his way home from work that afternoon.

They had to make an incision to let the fluid drain and suchered it back up in a way that closes the wound but also allows it to continue draining. If they had closed it completely (or just aspirated the fluid), his ear would have filled right back up, and we’d be back to where we started.

I was expecting Rocky to come home all bandaged up with one of those cones around his head so he couldn’t fuss with the ear, but he came home with nothing but an earful of suchers. We have to continually check to make sure the fluid that’s draining isn’t too excessive (and wipe it away so we don’t have blood and goo all over our house), and we have to watch to make sure he’s not scratching at his suchers or the incision (which you can still see).

The good thing is he’s quickly learning he can’t scratch that ear. The baddish news is he doesn’t like that. Instead of scratching, he growls and meows his way through the itch. He sounds pretty mad, but at least he isn’t fussing with his ear too much.

On top of all that, his ear is still flopped over. The doctor said it should go back to normal, so I don’t know if it’s still flopped because of the suchers or just because of the trauma. In any case, he looks funny. This is awful to say, but I hope his ear goes back to normal soon!

I made my normal breakfast smoothie and drank it on the way to drop Rocky off at the vet this morning. I finished before I got to the vet and left the emptyish cup in my car while I took Rocky in to see the doctor.

After I was back in the car and heading to work, I started to notice a strong cotton-candy smell. I followed my nose (just how Toucan Sam taught me) and discovered that what was left of my smoothie smelled EXACTLY like cotton candy.

So in case you ever wondered, cotton candy smells like vanilla, red raspberries, black raspberries and strawberries. You know you were wondering that.

Two shots of tequila are enough for this gringo. Blech.

We’re back from Mexico, the house is cleaned, the fridge and pantry are restocked, the animals are content, we’re tired, and we still have to unpack. I’ve uploaded a few of our pictures from the trip. There are more to come, but I just don’t have the patience or whatnot to edit and upload. So there you have it.

We had a great, relaxing trip. We stayed on the resort the entire trip and spent our time swimming, snorkeling, eating and just plain, old vacationing. It was fabulous. We had a little rain pretty much every day and were pelted with sand and rain when we were caught in a torrential downpour on the beach Wednesday afternoon. The rest of the day was rained out, but we made do. You can’t complain too much when you’re in paradise!

Highlights:

  • We saw two squids and an octopus when we snorkeled.
  • One of the spa’s free amenities was a hot, hot, hot vapor room that shot out minty steam. It sounds odd, but it was heavenly. I felt completely refreshed and clear-headed after a few minutes “getting my mint on” and have declared a “mint room” a must-have for our next house.
  • Mosquitoes love me. I hate them. A lot.
  • Sunburns hurt.
  • Mosquito bites and a sunburn make Jenny a crabby girl.
  • SPF 85 is a joke.
  • I’m not burned anymore, but I have a smoking-hot tan. Awesome.
  • I really should have brought along some tennis shoes and workout-appropriate clothing. Maybe I wouldn’t have brought back five extra pounds. Oh, well!
  • On a related note, vacation = ice cream every day. Sometimes with every meal.

Banana trees are weird!
