We decided to wait until a weekday to see the newest Batman movie because our local theater does $5 tickets Monday through Friday plus a $5 bottomless popcorn and pop combo. Sweet deal, right?
We went last night (Monday) because we just couldn’t stand to wait anymore, and I’m glad we did. Next time a big movie like this comes out, though, I’m tossing out my cheap standards and going ASAP.
Why? I heard too many great/excellent/modern classic/must-see types of reviews. “The Dark Knight” had been built up for weeks as anticipated to be a great film, then when several people I know saw it during its opening weekend, they all backed up the anticipated outcome by saying it was in fact an awesome move.
*Spoiler alert: Don’t read anymore if you haven’t seen it and still want to.*
I think I was expecting way too much because I was definitely disappointed. Don’t get me wrong. It was great. I was just expecting more in-depth character development for Joker. I expected the movie to end when we saw Harvey Dent become Two Face, setting up the next Batman. Instead, we got some development for Joker (Heath Ledger’s portrayal was outstanding and left me wanting more! more! more!), then a second villain for only 30 or so minutes until he “died” (I’m not convinced it wasn’t a cover-up for the Gotham public, setting us up for the sequel).
I think “The Dark Knight” is a classic example of too much quantity, not enough quality. There should have been either more focus on Joker’s character and shenanigans and/or just less on Harvey Dent/Two Face.
I don’t want to totally write the movie off, though, because there was a ton going on. I want to see it at least one more time before I officially call it overrated, but that will have to wait for its DVD release.
I went to sleep last night with big plans to do day 1 of C25K this morning with my shiny, new Nike + iPod system (technically minus the Nike for me) I received from Rob for my birthday. I calibrated it Sunday night and just didn’t wake up in time yesterday morning to give it a spin.
By the time I got dressed, pulled my too-long hair back (getting it cut tonight – yay!), synced Robert Ullery’s C25K podcast with my iPod and made sure it was in its own playlist (you can only choose shuffle or a playlist) so I could use the system AND the podcast, I had just enough time to do the 30-minute workout, take a quick shower, make breakfast and lunch (I’ve been packing breakfast and eating at work) and get ready to leave.
Except. Apparently the podcast is broken into tracks, so my Nike + iPod started it on the very last running segment. I stopped and messed around with it for a while, thinking I hit the wrong button or something. I finally figured out that I couldn’t listen to that podcast and use the system. Disappointed and running low on time, I opted to just turn around (the whole 100 yards I had gotten) and hop on the elliptical with what time I had left, which ended up being a sad 15 minutes.
But. I suppose 15 minutes is better than zero minutes, right?
The good news is I found another podcast, this time by Podrunner Intervals, that uses the same basic idea as C25K. The only difference is no Robert Ullery doing voiceovers (fine by me – his voice wasn’t great), and it comes in one long track.
The plan is back on for tomorrow morning.
Ugh. It wasn’t a good day. I got bored-hungry at work (craving something? who knows), and ended up staring at the vending machine and buying the Bugles before I could talk myself out of it. Yes, I really did push the buttons fast so I wouldn’t come to my senses. Smart, right?
Then, instead of my delicious leftover pasta primavera for dinner, I went with the McFatty hibachi rice and veggies because having it for four meals just wasn’t enough. Gosh, I do love “Japanese” (not entirely convinced it’s real Japanese and not an Americanized version of someone’s interpretation).
Then, even though I ate before we left for the movie, I didn’t resist the temptation to dig into Rob’s bucket of popcorn that was, of course, covered in the movie theater “butter topping” aka liquid fat. I mean, I certainly could have eaten more than I did, but still.
I’m not pleased with myself. Not at all. Oh, well.
Oh, yeah. And I didn’t wake up early enough to work out, AND I didn’t have time before we saw Batman, AND we got home too late (10) for a workout afterward.

I accepted a job offer on Friday! Starting Aug. 4, I will be a graphic designer for another of my company’s publications. I’m staying in the same building and obviously with the same company, but I’ll be moving from the third to the second floor and will be back in the design field finally. I first applied for the position on June 17, had an interview that week and a second one the next week and have been waiting for word ever since.
It’s been a long time since I wore my professional design hat, so I’m somewhat nervous about brushing off the dust and getting back into it. I’m beyond excited, though, and am so grateful for such a wonderful opportunity.
My Friday, Saturday and today have been nowhere near structured, but here’s an account of what I ate without the points:
Friday: yogurt combo, pasta primavera with tomato/basil sauce, cereal, one plate of random munchies at Howl at the Moon and many beverages
Saturday: Horiatiki (traditional Greek salad with veggies, feta, seasonings and some olive oil and vinegar), astronaut ice cream, two tempura chicken pieces, small portion of hibachi rice and veggies
Sunday: cereal, leftover hibachi rice and veggies and more leftovers.
I don’t feel like I went overboard with anything but the drinks Friday night, and we got some decent walking in on Saturday. It was a crappy food weekend, but it happens. Chaos, that is.
