How many of these monthly Netflix Stream Team posts have I written about RENT! now? Oh, so many.

Streamers are talking about musicals this month. The shows I’ve had stashed in my list for a while now range from RENT! (duh), to Footloose to Glee to The Phantom of the Opera(aaaahhh! Beware, the phantom of the … oh, wait).

Sadly, I don’t have many ETC-friendly musicals on my list. We tried Shrek the Musical, but the opening scene with Shrek’s parents kicking 7-year-old Shrek to the curb just … wasn’t appropriate.

We tried Mulan, but I threw in the towel when the questions about war started.

Thankfully, our old standards are full of music – Daniel Tiger, Signing Time, Sesame Street, Super Why.

If I see Mamma Mia pop up in Just Added, oh, man – ETC would flip out! Until then, we’ll just be grateful DVDs don’t wear out.

(Pssst, I’ve been secretly pining for a chance to see High School Musical. Soon, I hope!)

I have fought ETC to bedtime for four consecutive nights (solo, I might add), and they’ve fallen asleep within minutes.

Bliss.

Except, OF COURSE I just now realize they have been overtired. And OF COURSE we’re leaving for a week out of town tomorrow.

Because it would be too easy to figure out the solution to a parenting problem when one can actually apply said solution, amirite?

Speaking of, with a 7-8 am to 7 pm day, how would you have addressed the overtiredness? Attempt a nap? Move bedtime up 30-60 minutes? You know, just in case it happens again.

Because I’m sure it will.

Did you know that? Did you notice I’ve been ignoring you? Sorry. I’ve been overwhelmed with Thoughts about blogging for too long now. I still don’t know what I want to do with my blog, but I know some things I don’t want to do.

I don’t want to share what isn’t mine. My babies have grown into (little) kids, and they will someday be young adults then full-fledged adults. I’m still not sure how much of their story is mine to share, so I try to keep it to what you’d see if you saw us in public. Or something like that.

I don’t want to be the voice of _______ or an expert on ________. I am not good with pressure, and having a label like that makes me want to shrink back into a corner and chew my hair. You might have perceived me doing that very thing for the last too-many-months.

When I break it down like that, it shouldn’t be too hard for me to dust off the ol’ brain and start back to what I love – sharing some pretty average thoughts about my pretty average life!

If you saw the title and instantly sang out “Baby-sitters Club!”, you are one of my people.

The old-school BSC show was one of the most coveted items (is a TV show an item) of my childhood. We didn’t have Disney Channel at my house, so I lived for the free-preview weeks our cable company doled out regularly. Lucky for me, they’d usually throw in a BSC marathon, too. (My friends weren’t BSC fans. Otherwise, I would have mooched off them.)

I totally squealed when I saw Netflix added it a while ago. All the cheese is mine! Bonus, the full-length movie is also on Netflix. Oh, yeah. I totally owned that on VHS back in the day.

The ladies of the BSC aren’t the only totally gnarly shows from my childhood hanging out in my Netflix queue (do we still call it that?). I also have shows like Saved by the Bell (who didn’t want to marry Zach or be Kelly?), Goosebumps (I spent many weekend nights in middle school huddled on a daybed in the dark with my best friends), Knight Rider (this isn’t my pick, though I did occasionally watch it as a kid – Rob is the one who wanted his own KITT), and movies like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (“How can I possibly be expected to handle school on a day like this?”), The Great Outdoors, Who Framed Roger Rabbit (another pick for Rob – I don’t think I’ve ever seen this all the way through), Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Coming to America.

As if those big-kids favorites aren’t enough, I am also showing Toby, Eleanor and Callista the classics I loved as a kid, from older Disney films (they have finally fallen in love with Winnie the Pooh, and we can mix the classic film with the newer releases. They loved the classic Mickey Mouse Christmas specials, and I absolutely cannot wait to introduce them to School House Rock.

What are some of your favorite shows or movies that are a blast from your past?

New job ventures for Rob have meant a lot of solo-parenting nights with ETC. (A lot = 4-5 nights a week.)

With a day full of rambunctious 3-year-old shenanigans (cubed – because x3 isn’t really accurate), and the 70-30 chance I face bedtime meltdowns, I find myself in the dark more and more.

I tuck them in, turn off the light, close the door and retreat. I could be productive and clean up right away (like Rob does – he is a stronger than me) – God knows the pile of dirty dishes in the sink need washed or put in the dishwasher (which usually needs unloaded). There are stray toys left behind after ETC’s cleanup job (they’re 3 – they miss things). The laundry is forever in need of attention. I have to sweep the floors, wipe down the kitchen table, counters and ETC’s chairs (gross). Blankets need refolded. I usually need to look through the mail we brought in earlier.

There are Things To Do. Clearly.

Instead of retreating from the bedtime chaos and jumping right into my final cleanup duty, I collapse on the couch without turning on a light (bedtime currently happens just before sunset) and dive into social media.

I need that time with silence, stillness and the magic of adult voices inside my computer/phone that allow me to connect without doing anything at that moment if I don’t want to. Before I know it, I look up to total darkness, silence and a renewed motivation to get back to work and finish my day.

Or rather, so I can be left with no responsibilities but my writing, reading and marriage – when my husband finally gets home.
