“Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” by John Berendt was, indeed, intoxicating.

The nonfiction work reads like a juicy crime novel, and I had to keep reminding myself I was reading about true events and people. Berendt, a journalist, makes a perfect narrator. I’m not sure that many people could have experienced what he did first hand and still be able to pen an observant, detail-filled account of events with such a personal air without passing his own opinion of people and events through his written words. In fact, I feel as though I witnessed the whole story rather than reading the account of another’s experience.

I’m always afraid of giving too much away, so I’ll stop before I can even question myself.

After reading this book, I hope to make a trip down to Savannah soon while Berendt’s descriptions of places and people in Savannah are fresh in my mind.

I started to add this to the bottom of my WW post, but it totally deserves its own post.

I had to buy a new pair of jeans today, and I was extra disgruntled about it because I didn’t want to buy any new jeans until I dropped from a size 10 to a size 8.

For the record, I started this quest more than anything because my fat jeans – my size 12s were getting a little too tight for comfort, and I was soooo close to needing size 14s. Wow, right (edit – size 14 on my small, short 5’3″ frame is just plain old no good)? The size I was from about age 15 until age 19 was a 7/8. I crept up to a 12 at my heaviest back then, and when I dropped 30ish pounds, I fit into a 5/6.

Back to today – I grumpily pulled a size 10 off the shelf and sulked into the dressing room. I buttoned them and was pleasantly surprised to find they fit comfortably. And if you pay any attention at all to how jeans fit brand new and clean versus how they after being worn for a bit, you know that jeans that fit comfortably brand new will be too big after a few hours of wear.

Knowing this, I asked Rob to get me a size 8, and guess what! THEY FIT! I didn’t even care that they weren’t on sale. I happily paid full price for my precious size 8 jeans. I finally feel like I’ve made major progess!

153.2! Finally, a freaking loss.

I’m happy to report that I feel rejuvenated in my quest to get healthier and smaller.

I think I logged four actual workouts the last two weeks, and my off days were spent more active than normal – working in the yard, cleaning the house like mad, etc. I feel like I’ve gotten control of my carb intake (such an issue), and I’ve been working hard at getting in my five servings of veggies and fruits. Apparently it has all paid off!

I’m on page 36 “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,” and I’m already captivated.

I normally get too excited about a book and fly through it, missing a lot of the little details. This one is so descriptive, painting such detailed images in my mind, that I’m trying my hardest to savor each and every word.

I’ve heard and read that this book will make you want to visit Savannah. I’ve made one quick visit to the (beautiful) city once, but I’m already itching to return and pay closer attention to the city, especially what I’ve read about in the short 36 pages so far.

Good thing it’s only a few-hours drive away!

I know it’s late, but this was filmed a few days after Christmas.
